Beginners’ Tips On Loose Diamonds

By

Diamonds thru the centuries have always been seen as a symbol of love and luxury. There is no detailed documentation of who first discovered this gem however they were said to have been mined first in India 3,000 years ago. Even then it was seen as extraordinary and was even called thunderbolt as it was believed to ward off spirits. It then comes as no surprise that until now diamonds are commodities people invest in. Diamonds are purchased in two manners. Set in jewelry or loose. Loose diamonds for sale means diamonds that are sold on their own and not set in a ring, bracelet etc. Loose diamonds for sale interest people who either want to have jewelry made to their own specifications hence they buy the gem and then have the jewelry created, or people who purchase it as an investment.

Before purchasing loose diamonds for sale he or she must make sure it is accompanied by a grading certificate. A grading certificate is authentication that those diamonds have gone thru extensive testing on the 4 Cs. What are the 4 Cs? A diamond is graded on several things in order to judge its value; this includes cut, clarity, color and carat weight. Cut is how the gem was shaped. A diamond’s beauty is not just in its color but its brilliance and optical properties. Next we have clarity. This measures the type of inclusions or flaws, number and location in the diamond. The more flaws the lesser its value. Color, most commercially available diamonds are classified by color, or more appropriately, the lack of color. Lastly we have carats. The weight of the diamond is measured in carats although when it comes to diamonds bigger does not always mean better. When selecting a diamond, you should note how the entire gemstone looks as far as color, clarity and cut and finally carat weight.

A certificate is necessary when buying diamonds. It will guarantee the buyer of both the quality and genuineness of the gemstone. Furthermore, should you decide to resell the diamond the certificate will allow you to receive a fair price. With a certificate, your diamond can never be undervalued or suspected of being a fake. There are several the leading independent gemological labs who can certify your gem. The Gemological Institute of America, European Gemological Society, and The American Gemological Society are examples of these labs.
