Liposuction VS Tummy Tuck: Which Is Better?

By

The vast improvements in scientific progress has made us present day people really, really lucky. In the past, the only option for people who wanted to lose weight was diet and exercise; people who were heavy or obese due to genetic or illness-related reasons were simply resigned to their fate.

Today, however, the leaps and bounds in the field of cosmetic surgery have given people a variety of options. Is that flabby tummy getting more unsightly by the day? You don’t have to sweat it out at the gym for months just to tone it. Now you can go to a doctor and ask for a surgical or even a non-surgical option to help you get the body you want.

But with these options, how exactly would an ordinary person know what to choose? There are simply too many to choose from, hence the debates that often times crop up when the question of the proper procedure to choose comes up.

The liposuction vs tummy tuck debate is one such example. Both procedures deal with that problematic tummy area. Beer bellies, flabby abs – these names are but a few delineating the terrible and unsightly bulge in the abdominal area. So which one should you choose: liposuction or tummy tuck?

The tummy tuck procedure was used back when liposuction wasn’t available yet. Essentially, this procedure removes the excess skin from the lower abdomen. With liposuction, however, it can actually correct the excess fat problem in the abdominal area, and is proven by doctors to be much safer and less traumatic for the body.

When the tummy is “tucked”, this actually means that the doctor removes the excess skin and sews what remains back together. As frightening as it sounds, this is actually safer than pulling the skin and risking the dangers of messing with the body’s digestive and excretory system.

Liposuction, especially the tumescent liposuction procedure, is a lot less invasive as it requires only a few incisions that barely noticeable and heal much faster. More importantly, there are several options when it comes to liposuction procedures, so that the patient can choose which one he or she is most comfortable with.

Some people respond to the liposuction vs tummy tuck debate by claiming that the both can actually work together. After sucking the body’s fats out, some recommend that the patient follow up with a tummy tuck to remove loose skin. This sounds like a good idea, but really requires case-to-case analysis. There isn’t always a need for external “assistance” when it comes to the excess skin. Doctors have used the example of skin returning to its previous form and shape after a pregnant woman gives birth.

So, what do your opinion on this whole liposuction vs tummy tuck debate?

The answer depends on the needs. With all the excess skin, then you might need the tummy tuck. If you're younger, and have more flexible skin that would immediately contour to the amount of fat, or the lack thereof, then liposuction would be best.
