The Popularity Of Liposuction For Men

By

Liposuction or Lipoplasty is an operation that removes fat from different sites of the body: commonly the abdomen, thighs, buttocks, neck and arms.

Since its earlier years, liposuction has been popular among women. However, recently, more men are undergoing this procedure.

Liposuction for men is almost the same as for women though slightly different in the areas where the procedure is being performed. Liposuction for men is commonly done around the abdomen, the “love handles”, male breasts (gynecomastia) and the neckline. The cost of liposuction for men is also slightly more expensive than that for women. This is because the fat found on men is more fibrous, so it is more difficult and time consuming to remove. Secondly, men are typically larger than women, so the fat to be removed would be greater in men than in women.

Why do Men Need Liposuction?

Men would often resort to liposuction when diet and exercise cannot rid their bodies of unwanted fat. It adds contour to their bodies and defines their facial features to give them a more youthful appearance. Best of all, men who undergo liposuction gain more self confidence.

Liposuction for men is also important in the treatment of gynecomastia. This condition is the development of abnormally large mammary glands in males, resulting in breast enlargement. In this case, it must first be determined if the excess tissue is fatty or glandular. If the breast enlargement is due to fatty tissues, then liposuction is the method of choice in correcting the appearance of the chest. However, if the breasts are enlarged with glandular tissues, other medical procedures should be pursued.

What are the Pros and Cons of Liposuction for Men?

The advantage of liposuction is more on the aesthetic side. It gives men more details to their facial features, better looking bodies, and increased self confidence in general. For example, in the abdomen area, men would want to have perfectly tight abs. Men can get rid of this unwanted fat in a shorter time frame, too, compared to diet and exercise. It may only take a day or a week for the recovery, depending on the extent of the procedure.

The risk of liposuction is the procedure itself. Some of the risks are:

  • Sagging skin due to excessive liposuction (going beyond the typical 10 lbs. or 5Kg)
  •  Surgical complications
  • Anesthesia risks
  • Excessive bleeding

Men who are considering liposuction should be in the know. Check out the pros and cons. It is best to consult a physician or a surgeon about this. Also, in terms of cost, do researches on establishments providing this service, the experience of the surgeon, the number of procedures he or she has performed, testimonials of their patients, and the equipment used. Cost should not be the only consideration in undergoing liposuction. Go for secure private financing to help cover for the cost of this procedure. It is best to have an experienced liposuction surgeon than to invest on a low cost procedure which in the end might give you more headaches than a well sculpted body.
