It’s very common for you to be fearful for you and your family’s personal safety whether you are physically in the home or away from it. If you are anything like me, then being alone at night can make you even more anxious. Every creek that the house makes or even your neighbor’s dog barking can be unnerving.

If you want to be able to live more peacefully in your home, whether it is during daylight hours or while you sleep at night, and then you might want to review these helpful tips to help protect you and your family members.

The first thing to address are the doors. Take a look at every door entrance. Make sure all door locks work properly and they should have a quality deadbolt installed. Do not neglect those sliding glass doors, almost every home in Florida has a sliding glass door and most homes across the US these days have them as well. Many people are unaware that sliding glass doors can have a dead bolt lock installed as well and the cost for sliding door deadbolts is about $30. There are even digital deadbolts for sliding glass doors that cost about $120.00.

Another measure you can take in securing sliding glass doors is to place a sliding door track lock which attaches to the static door and is then flipped up to allow the door to open or it flips down to prevent the door from opening. If you want an even cheaper alternative, you can simply get a piece of wood or a heavy duty PCP pipe that measures nearly the length of the door.

Do not leave extra keys outside anywhere. You may think you are being clever by hiding the key under the door mat, above the door frame, hidden under a rock or potted plant but thieves already know these tricks and those are the first places they will check out. Give house keys to a trusted neighbor, family member or good friend only.

Dogs can be a good intruder deterrent but they should not be fully relied on since pets can be poisoned or distracted by food. Intruders do not just break into a house and take a chance that a dog might be present. Intruders will scope a house first to see what challenges they may have. So if they know you have pets, they will be prepared with food or poison or a combination of both to make your pets no longer a concern.

To keep your home safe from fires, you should have a fire extinguisher available on every story of your home. If you have only 1 story, you may even want to have 2 available on opposite sides of the house. So perhaps one located in the kitchen and another near the bedrooms. Make sure all family members are aware of where they are located and you can even show members how to use them. You don’t have to actually use the extinguisher to demonstrate to your family how to use them; instead you can have them watch videos on Youtube on how to use a fire extinguisher.

Another measure to take for fire safety for two story homes is to make certain that you have fire escape ladders available for every room located on the second story. These are inexpensive and worth having just in case they are needed.

You may want to invest in a wireless cctv system. These home security systems help you see what’s going on around the parameters of your home at any given time through the use of your computer. These remote security cameras are great because you can even have images taken by the camera emailed to you at any time even while at work or away from your home.

Take the advice outlined in this article and you can be sleeping at night with peace of mind starting tonight!
